NO SMOKING !!
Experience the benefits of quitting smoking in a matter of minutes.
It is said that tobacco is the only legal product that,if used as intended, kills half its users. But is that graphic assessment enough to convince the world's 1.1 billion smokers to quit? The answer,it seems,is 'NO!'. The pleasure of smoking, the coolness factor in celebrities who light up,the aggressive and insidious tobacco marketing campaigns, and its easy availability all work against anti-smoking campaigns.
The world bank reports that one-in-three adults now smokes. By 2025,there will be half a million more smokers. Of these, half will die prematurely of cancer, emphysema, chronic bronchitis, coronary artery disease, stroke, hypertension or complications from blocked arteries.
The benefits of quitting :
- Within 20 minutes, blood pressure and pulse rate drop to normal, temperature of the hands and feet returns to normal.
- Within eight hours, the carbon monoxide level in blood drops to normal and oxygen level in the blood increase to normal.
- Within 24 hours, the risk of a sudden heart attack decreases.
- Within 48 hours, nerve endings begin to regenerate and your ability to smell and taste begins to return to normal.
- Within two weeks to three months, blood circulation improves and lung function increases by up to 30%
- Within 1-9 months, overall energy increases, while bouts of coughing, nasal congestion, fatigue and shortness of breath are markedly reduced. Natural cleansing mechanisms of the respiratory tract return to normal, so the body is able to handle mucus, clean the respiratory tract and prevent respiratory infections.
- Within one year, risk of coronary heart disease is reduced by 50%
- Within five years, the risk of dying from lung cancer is reduced by 50%. The risk of cancer of the mouth is half that of a tobacco user's.
- Within 10 years, the risk of dying from lung cancer. Stroke or heart attack is the same as that of a non-smokers's.
Lighting up young :
Children are more vulnerable to the smoking habit than adults. ''Nicotine addiction can be established quickly'', the world bank says. ''In young adolescents who have recently taken up smoking, saliva concentrations of cotinine - a breakdown product of nicotine - climb steeply over time toward the levels found in established smokers.''
The world bank calculates that children who take up smoking range from 14,000 - 15,000 per day in high - income countries and 68,000 to 84,000 in middle - and low - income countries. ''This means that every day, worldwide, there are between 82,000 and 99,000 young people starting to smoke and risking rapid addiction to nicotine.
Ever wondered what you are introducing to your body each time you take a puff?
